Postdoctoral researcher in information technology, focus on trustworthiness in the Internet of Things

The School of Information Technology (ITE), Halmstad University, is looking for a postdoc in the field of trustworthiness in the Internet of Things (IoT) within the area of edge computing and edge clouds. The position is full time for 1 year, with possibility of extension with 1 more year, and earliest starting date is January 2018. Last day for application is 2017-12-14.

The research in the school of ITE and the technology area of smart electronics systems is focusing on intelligent, connected and trustable things, including research on dependable communication, embedded computing, and advanced sensing. We study embedded connected systems in the broader context of cyber-physical systems, industry 4.0, and IoT.

We have a very good track record of doing research in close collaboration with the Swedish industry and public sector. The school has an annual research budget of about 57 MSEK, 13 full professors and 6 guest professors, around 50 researchers with Ph.D.s, and close to 40 Ph.D. students. Project Description
The postdoc position is fully funded by the European project SCOTT (Secure COnnected Trustable Things), which has over 50 partners from 12 countries. Research within the Swedish consortium is done in cooperation with Ericsson, Realtime Embedded, SICS, and KTH. The project is aiming at creating trust in wireless networks, which is a major challenge to bring out the full potential of the IoT. SCOTT focuses on wireless communication and sensor networks in several domains such as in automotive and smart infrastructure, addressing numerous European societal challenges (e.g., smart, green, and integrated transport). SCOTT enables efficient and dependable connectivity and ubiquity of intelligent embedded systems. Particular attention is paid to the design of sensor networks that provide a good trade-off between multiple quality-of-service factors, such as real-time performance, reliability, energy efficiency, and robustness. For more information on the project, please see its official homepage: https://scottproject.eu/.

Within the framework of SCOTT the candidate will address topics like static and dynamic resource optimization frameworks for bubbles of interconnected trustable things (in-vehicle or other mobile sensor networks); mechanisms to securely coordinate, manage, and optimize multiple bubbles; implementation and empirical evaluation of trustable bubbles as well as interacting trustable bubbles; and communication architectures for interconnected trustable things. The application domains will include in-vehicle wireless systems as well as automated logistics systems and robots.

In the first phase of the project the focus will be on the concept of trust and how dependable wireless communication can support the development of connected trustable things. As these trustable things will be connected into local edge clouds or bubbles, we will develop communication architectures that support trust on the bubble level. These bubbles can be mobile, as, e.g., in-vehicle networks. The next step will be to analyze and optimize the interaction between multiple mobile wireless bubbles, in order to allow for secure, connected, and trustable things on a global scale. Case studies will play an integral part of the work.

Principal duties
The selected postdoc is expected to conduct original research in the area of trustable and dependable wireless communication within SCOTT, as specified above. The duties include theoretical and experimental work, documented in the form of technical papers and reports. Teaching may be included in the position at a level not exceeding 20%. We also expect the selected postdoc to take an active part in the continued development of the technology area and that he/she will take part in applying for research funding from various financiers, both in Sweden and abroad.

Qualification
The position is intended for a candidate with a recent Ph.D. degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Computer Engineering (or closely related fields), and a proven track record of publications in relevant journals and conferences. Preferably, the candidate should have done his/her Ph.D. on or have experience in dependable wireless communication or related topics. Experience of theoretical and experimental work within the field is important. The candidate should have good programming and simulation skills, and knowledge within optimization. Experience in prototyping and practical experiments, as well as knowledge within security and/or privacy will be considered positively. The ability and interest to work across traditional disciplines and to initiate new research collaborations is essential. Good written and spoken communication skills in English are required, as well as team working skills and availability to travel.

Salary
Salary is to be settled by negotiation. The application should include a statement of the salary level desired by the candidate.
