Description
Primary care across Sweden has introduced digital applications to automate triage as an alternative to manual consultation via healthcare staff. Many different types of applications to automate triage are used today, but general conclusions about their usefulness, impact and value are lacking. The doctoral project aims to investigate how different methods for automating triage affect patient safety and influence working conditions in practice. The project is designed as a multiple case study, which with the help of several data sources examines and compares several examples of digital applications. The applications that will be studied are based on triage enhanced by artificial intelligence, deterministic triage and self-triage. All are currently used in Swedish primary care. The studies take place in co-production with the companies behind the applications and healthcare operations. Qualitative and quantitative data will be collected with managers and clinical staff who use the applications in daily practice and with patients who use the applications when seeking primary care.

The position will be located within the Healthcare improvement group that holds a nationally leading position within implementation science and AI in healthcare. The research will be executed in collaboration with Patient Safety and Human Factors research at Nottingham University. The doctoral position includes a total of at least 6 months of research visit at Nottingham University.

This is a full-time position available from September 1st, 2024 (or as soon as possible), for a period of four years to a PhD degree (extended with one year after one year, subject to satisfactory progress of the PhD study). Since the employment also includes teaching responsibilities corresponding to a maximum of 20% of full-time, the position is extended with the same amount of time as the teaching activities.
