Halmstad University, School of Information Technology

Background
Recent growth in the research activities and the well-established educational programs of the School of Information Technology (ITE) is enabling a significant expansion. In 2018 the total research expenditures exceeded 70 MSEK and the school hosted over 850 students. Over the next two years, the School will grow significantly.

We are seeking to appoint a full-time post-doctoral researcher for a two year position, with expertise in machine learning and data mining.

Description
The post-doctoral researcher will work in collaboration with members of our research group, as well as with our industrial partners, on cutting-edge science related to machine learning, autonomous knowledge creation, representation learning, causality, anomaly detection, interactive data mining, predictive maintenance and more. The work will cover the Battery Cortex project, and other related projects, as necessary. The work aims to provide electric vehicle OEMs and Fleet Operators with insights into quality, faults and anomalies of the battery packs, a critical component in Electric Vehicles. Modern vehicles continuously collect massive amounts of data that contains crucial information related to their usage, driver behaviour, external conditions, and more -- all of which affect battery lifetime. However, due to the complexity of the system and the environment, coupled with the limitations of the embedded sensors, the problem remains challenging and novel algorithmic developments are necessary to create required insights. The expected result of the work are research publications and software platform for anomaly and fault detection that runs automated analysis on the data generated by EV battery packs. Experience from vehicle/automotive domain is a plus, but it is not a requirement. If you like to work on Machine learning problems using real-world datasets, this position is for you!

Principal duties
The successful candidate will work primarily with research in an EU project called "Battery Cortex".

The duties will be:

  • To organize and undertake research in fault detection using machine learning
  • To contribute to the analysis of research
  • To contribute to academic publications and conference papers (where appropriate leading on these)
  • To contribute to report writing
  • To contribute to teaching in programming, data mining and machine learning

In Sweden the position of postdoctoral researcher is a qualifying appointment, which is intended to enable the employee to develop their independence as a researcher and to obtain merits that may develop their competence for another post with higher eligibility requirements. As a postdoctoral researcher you are expected to be active in the research seminars organised by the research environment EIS at the school of Information Technology. You are also expected to teach under-graduate students.

Qualification
This position is suited to applicants with a PhD in machine learning and/or data mining. A postdoc position requires that the doctoral degree was awarded within three years of the application deadline.

For appointment as a postdoc, the following assessment criteria will be applied:
• Ability to conduct research of high international quality
• Documented experience from research in collaboration with industrial partners and/or
interdisciplinary teams
• Ability to conduct high-quality teaching and to develop courses at different levels
• Experience in supervision of master students
• Ability to attract external funding
• Dynamism, curiosity, independence, creativity and good teamwork
• Willingness to address opportunities and challenges within AI, machine learning and data mining

Salary
Salary is to be settled by negotiation. The application should include a statement of the salary level required by the candidate.

Application
Applications should be sent via Halmstad University's recruitment system Varbi (see link on this page).

The application package shall consist of:
1) a cover letter stating the purpose of the application and a brief statement of why you believe that your goals are well-matched with the goals of this position, together with a description of future research plans

2) a CV that includes at least
- a list of previous degrees, with dates and institutions
- a complete list of publications with 2-3 most relevant ones for this position marked
- a description of previous research and other work experience and links to online copies of the most important publications

3) contact information for at least three references.

For further information, please contact head of department Stefan Byttner (stefan.byttner@hh.se) or head of school Magnus Clarin (Magnus.Clarin@hh.se).
