Halmstad University, School of Information Technology

Background

Recent growth in the research activities and the well-established educational programs of the School of Information Technology (ITE) is enabling a significant expansion. In 2018 the total research expenditures exceeded 70 MSEK and the school hosted over 850 students. Over the next two years, the School will grow significantly.

The Department of Intelligent Systems and Digital Design (ISDD) at Halmstad University is seeking to appoint a full-time researcher focused on Halmstad Intelligent Home (HINT). The ISDD Department, has for a long time had a strong scientific output in Health Technology. Past research related to HINT was to a large extent done as part of CAISR, including the SA3L project, and was an important part of our scientific agenda. With the new collaboration with Halmstad Hospital and Region Halland, however, there is a need to expand the scope. As part of "Ai-way Halland", the University has established a strong network of public sector and commercial actors, and our goal is to make HINT the focal point of those relationships. The major part of the employment is intended to be research, but technical management of the infrastructure and interactions with our external partners are also important parts of the employment. This is in addition to general expectation of senior staff to be involved in doctoral education, teaching and supervising undergraduate and graduate students, etc. The appointed researcher is expected to develop a high-quality funded research program (together with colleagues as well as existing and new external partners) and must be committed to excellence in teaching at both graduate and undergraduate levels. One prioritized area for development is data mining with a specific focus on self-monitoring of complex systems, while collaboration with other scientific areas is important.

Research is often carried out in collaboration with companies and public sector. The research on digital service innovation is one of the prioritized research areas where continued development of research strength is expected in order to reach excellence in international and national collaborations. This area, which is expected to attract considerable industrial interest also in the future, will be an important research area for Halmstad University in the coming years.

Description

Example tasks can include:

*) Facilitate the infrastructure behind the concept of “Virtual Hospital” developed by the  Health Technology Center (HCH)

*) Involvement in the UCAmI cup, a competition based on data collected in our smart environments.

*) Set up SensorCentral at HINT to harmonize with other partners like Ulster, Luleå and JAEN, who are using SensorCentral as a common middleware.

*) Curate activity classification and deviation detection modules developed by the REMIND consortium and try to get them to work in our environment.

*) Create an activity viewer. This would simulate a smart clinic/hospital that can follow-up on patients at home. One goal is getting models to work in different environments. Most are not working in any spectacular way, they are only doing supervised learning that works on one data set. We can have 3 different sets of sensors at HINT and we could collect very nice datasets with differences that we could explore for transfer learning.

The position is intended for applicants with a recent PhD degree in computer engineering, computer science or electrical engineering.
