The goal for Halmstad University is to strengthen competence in the areas of machine learning and AI, as an increasingly important driver of digitalization of hospitals that can support patient centred care, increase the quality of medical services and to reduce costs, to meet growing healthcare needs of the future. Appointment as Assistant professor is a qualifying appointment with the purpose to give the employee a possibility to promote to Associate professor. Appointment as Assistant professor is for four years.
Work assignments
The recruited person will be expected to teach 20% and do research to 80%. The planned research activities build upon our existing research, including the abovementioned iMedA project, by addressing three research questions. First, how to create a meaningful and comprehensive representation of each patient based on comprehensive medical data. Second, how to predict different clinical outcomes (e.g., re-admissions) and non-clinical behaviors (e.g., medication non-adherence) using interpretable machine learning methods. Third, how to identify a selection of intervention strategies that are most appropriate for a particular patient, by combining both data-driven and knowledge driven approaches. The overall scope is to increase information driven care capabilities using ML on several data domains including EHR, financial, HR and other production generated data in order to create new insights. All three research questions pose challenges that go beyond current state-of-the-art solutions in terms of information fusion from diverse data sources, identification of relevant factors, interpretability of data mining results, causal relation discovery and augmenting machine learning with expert knowledge.
In CAISR (www.hh.se/caisr) we have long experience with very fruitful collaboration and relationship building between the University and companies. This position will follow the same general setup, with the assistant professor spending approximately two says on company premises in order to understand the inner working, the culture and the day-to-day operation. This is expected to lead to a deep relationship that allows us to coordinate on strategic level, where Hallandia V helps us shape future CAISR research directions. As a result, the collaboration will generate many new possibilities for joint projects and offer us an opportunity to increase our visibility. Given the strong research background of the Hallandia V company we also expect several high-level publications to be co-authored jointly.
The “triple helix” model of innovation that this project focuses on will help increase the quality of healthcare within Halland. Neither academic nor clinical actors alone can make the best use of all the available data – it is necessary to tighten the connection to the business sector. Hallandia V can bring this perspective, which is currently lacking, into the existing collaboration between CAISR and Halmstad Hospital. The Region Halland serves as problem owner and provides specification of requirements, as well as facilitates clinical studies, feasibility analysis, access to patients and clinicians, etc. That provides a foundation for AI and data mining research and technical results created within CAISR. The final step, however, is the commercialization and turning of those results into products, to be enabled by co-production with a company like Hallandia V.
Health care is a rapidly growing application area for AI and Machine learning. The recruited person will be a valuable asset for advancing and giving the following master level courses: Learning Systems, Data Mining, and Applied Data Mining. The person will also be involved in the Graduate professional development program (second-cycle courses targeted at the business sector). The recruited person will be of great help in supervision of bachelor and master level students as well as assistant supervision of PhD students.
Qualifications
The applicant must hold a doctoral degree in Artificial Intelligence/Data Mining/Machine Learning/Information Technology or closely related fields. The applicant must demonstrate a strong, currently active research profile in the above fields. The overall scientific production should be in high-quality research journals. Documented experience from innovation, research and development in an industrial environment is also a strong merit. The applicant should share the value that diversity and equality among researchers and teachers bring higher quality to research and education.
