Information driven care 
Halmstad University has established a multidisciplinary research programme in information driven care, positioning the University as a national leader in integrating artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, implementation and innovation research, explicitly in health care.  

We are pleased to announce five doctoral positions in Information driven care, thanks to a donation from Carl Bennet AB. These positions will delve into diverse and critical areas at the intersection of healthcare and AI. The doctoral projects encompass: 

  • Ethical Considerations in AI Utilization: Delving into the ethical implications of AI technology in healthcare. 
  • Enhancing Patient Safety in Primary Care: Exploring how AI can improve patient safety in primary care settings. 
  • Predicting Sudden Cardiac Death: Utilizing AI technology to predict and prevent sudden cardiac death. 
  • Developing Multimodal Language Models for Healthcare: Creating advanced language models tailored for healthcare applications. 
  • Business Model Innovation for International HealthTech Scalability: Investigating the scalability of HealthTech innovations, considering interdisciplinary challenges. 

These projects address health challenges jointly identified with other sectors, advance the research frontier, and develop technologies and processes for information driven healthcare solutions. These positions offer a unique chance to work on groundbreaking projects, under the guidance of esteemed faculty members and alongside talented peers. The School of Business, Innovation and Sustainability 
The University consists of four interdisciplinary academies and the current position is located at the School of Business, Innovation and Sustainability (FIH). Here you get to work in a research and educational environment with a focus on sustainable development and entrepreneurship. The school trains future economists, engineers, environmental scientists and biologists. The school has approximately 120 employees and consists of four departments, the department of Construction and Energy Engineering, the department of Business Studies, the department of Environmental and Biosciences and the department of Engineering and Innovation. FIH offers education at the undergraduate and advanced level, as well as doctoral education in the field of Innovation Sciences. The research is multidisciplinary and often takes place in co-production with other actors.

Description
We are seeking a doctoral student for the project "Transforming Healthcare: Bridging Gaps in HealthTech Scalability Across Sweden and the UK". The project aims to address collaboration challenges within health innovation ecosystems, specifically concentrating on fostering business model innovations (BMIs) in HealthTech firms. The primary goal is to accelerate and align the commercialization, adoption, and implementation of HealthTech innovations. The research will encompass perspectives from both the firm and health care perspectives. The primary objective is to unravel the fundamental mechanisms influencing the scalability of HealthTech solutions. This research project aims to contribute valuable insights to the academic field of innovation sciences and business, particularly within the framework of information driven care. 

The doctoral student will be in the Innovation and Entrepreneurship research group. The research will be executed in collaboration with the newly established Sectoral Economic Performance institute with regular visits to Imperial College throughout the doctoral period, in total at least 6 months (https://www.imperial.ac.uk/sectoral-economic-performance/).  

As a doctoral student, you may for example perform the following work tasks; conduct systematic literature reviews, formulate research questions, work creatively to find solutions, write academic texts, analyze complex issues, collaborate with researchers from other fields, industry and healthcare, discuss your own and other peoples work, take part in course work etc. Your research results should be continuously reported at international research conferences and seminars, leading to a doctoral degree. To succeed as a doctoral student in this project, you need to act professionally in your role and work independently with the guidance of supervisors and other competencies involved in the project. 

This is a full-time position available from September 1st, 2024 (or as soon as possible), for a period of four years to a PhD degree (extended with one year after one year, subject to satisfactory progress of the PhD study). Since the employment also includes teaching responsibilities corresponding to a maximum of 20% of full-time, the position is extended with the same amount of time as the teaching activities.  

Qualifications
The doctoral student is admitted to the doctoral program subject Innovation and Entrepreneurship. 

The requirements for this position:  

  • MSc degree in a field relevant to the research project area.  
  • Excellent oral and written communication in English. 
  • There is also a mandatory requirement for English equivalent to English B/6. 

Meritous: 

  • Management, business and/or health innovation background 
  • Experience of working with business development or health innovation issues 

Desirable: 

  • Experience of working with stakeholders from different types of organisations (e.g., industry and healthcare) 
  • Experiences or knowledge of different healthcare systems (specifically the Swedish and English systems) 
  • Experiences of and interest in research on the processes around business model innovation and health innovation. 

Emphasis will be placed on personal competency. That involves showing engagement in the research area, the project, and other stakeholders. It is of importance to communicate well with people from different fields and organisations. 

Students expecting to finalize their degree the coming month are also welcome to apply. Only those who are or have been admitted to third-cycle courses and study programs at a higher education may be appointed to doctoral studentships. (The Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5 Section 3). The student’s ability to benefit from doctoral studies will be taken into account when we make the appointment. Salary
Doctoral students are employees of the University and paid a salary according to a uniform salary scale, adjusted in relation to the progress in education.
