Halmstad University is a Swedish higher education institution located in the city of Halmstad on the Southern West coast of the country. The university is today characterised by innovation-driven research in the areas of information and communication technology, health and lifestyle, and sustainable development.

Halmstad University is organised in four schools, where the School of Business, Engineering and Science hosts the Department of Construction and Energy Engineering. At this department, the Halmstad University District Heating and Cooling Research Group has been active since 2009.

The Department of Construction and Energy Engineering at Halmstad University invites applications for the position as Ph.D. student in Energy Technology with specialisation in District Heating, as soon as possible. The position will be part of the Halmstad University District Heating and Cooling Research Group, which conducts research and education within the field both in national and international contexts, with a focus on efficient and sustainable energy systems solutions for future Europe.

Work assignments
The position is a full-time employment and consists of research studies (80%) and institutional duties (20%). Research studies usually consist of research work (75%) and doctoral courses (25%). 

The overall orientation of the research studies is district heating in future Europe from an energy systems perspective, with main focus on increased integration of renewable energy sources, low-temperature excess heat sources, and 4th generation heat distribution technologies. Main work assignments consist of data gathering, data- and database management, development of methods and approaches, numerical and spatial analysis, literature studies, and writing of reports and scientific articles. Digital work environments include Geographical Information Systems (GIS), relational databases, geodatabases, standard statistical and mathematical software, as well as regular MS Office applications. As the research work to a considerable degree will take place in the context of research projects, a certain degree of travelling for participation in meetings, workshops, and conferences will be part of the assignment.

Institutional duties consist essentially of teaching activities, primarily lead of seminar and laboratory sessions, but as well lecturing, supervision, and course management during the progression of the assignment. Examples of courses where the applicant could contribute include at current Geographical Information Systems, District Heating Technology, Energy Supply, but also other energy related courses may become relevant.

Regarding doctoral courses to be attended, this will be decided by the main supervisor respecting the wishes and interests of the applicant. Suitability of doctoral courses may further be influenced by the selected university of registration, since usually one or two doctoral courses are mandatory at given graduate schools.

Qualifications
Applicants should possess in-depth knowledge and interest concerning district heating and/or energy systems analysis, as well as wide competence in the field of energy technology. Master of Science in Energy Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics or other suitable subject. Good communication skills in English, both in speech and writing, is a requirement.

Only persons who are being admitted, or already have been admitted, to doctoral studies at an institution of higher education may be appointed doctoral students. (The Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5, § 3). The admission is typically planned together by the main supervisior and the PhD candidate. The student’s ability to benefit from doctoral studies will be taken into account when we make the appointment. (The Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5, § 5).

Additional merit: Previous experiences in database management and work involving Geographical Information Systems.

Salary
Doctoral students are employees of the University and paid a salary according to a uniform salary scale, adjusted in relation to the progress in education.

The position includes studies up to a doctoral degree and is annually extended in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5, §7. The total employment period is four years but may be extended to a maximum of five years if the student performs 20% teaching or other tasks within the university.
