Recent growth in the research activities and the well-established educational programs of the School of Information Technology (ITE) is enabling a significant expansion. In 2017 the total research expenditures where over 67 MSEK and the school had over 800 students. Over the next two years, the School will grow significantly.

Description

Appointment is intended to contribute to the research activities of the School of Information Technology (ITE) at Halmstad University. Appointment may be made either as Assistant Professor (in Swedish Biträdande lektor) or Associate Professor (in Swedish Universitetslektor) depending on experience and qualifications.

Appointment as Assistant Professor is a qualifying appointment with the purpose to give the employee a possibility to promote to Associate Professor. Appointment as Assistant Professor is for four years. Appointment as Associate Professor is a permanent full-time position.

General Duties

Research Duties - The appointed professor will contribute to the continued development of the area of Computer Science at Halmstad University, especially through establishing strong research activity in the area and connecting it with existing areas of expertise, such as physics, analog electronics, hardware, embedded systems, modeling and simulation, software, AI, and digital services. The ideal research portfolio established is one that strengthens the university in the profile areas of Smart Mobility and Healthcare Innovation, and will be in areas of interest to national industrial partners. Day to day activities will include representing the areas of Computer Science internally and externally and connecting it productively with other areas, carrying out research of high international quality, participating in recruiting and mentoring doctoral students, developing and carrying out externally funded research activities.

Educational Duties - The appointed professor will participate in developing current and new programs relating to Computer Science, including teaching and mentoring of students at the undergraduate, Masters, and Doctoral levels. Courses available to teach include such as introductory programming (in Swedish), advanced object-oriented programming, algorithms and data structures, embedded systems programming, distributed systems programming, security for embedded systems, advanced programming techniques, and testing and verification of embedded systems. For introductory courses, knowledge of the Swedish language is required. Teaching also includes the supervision of thesis projects at the undergraduate and Masters levels. Educational duties also strengthening the connection between current needs of regional industrial partners and research opportunities available for Masters and undergraduate students.

General Qualifications

The position requires having a PhD in Computer Science or related area. The ideal candidate has a broad interest in research and education in Programming Languages and Embedded Systems and deep expertise in at least one of those areas. Other desirable areas of expertise include domain specific languages (practical and formal aspects), hardware-description languages, hybrid systems, dataflow languages, parallel and concurrent languages, and dynamic and scripting languages.

In addition to the qualifications statement above, assessment will include three components, namely, research, education, and collaboration, and will follow Halmstad University’s guidelines for appointment and promotion. Qualified candidates are expected to demonstrate sustained excellence in these components over the last five years. The applicant is encouraged to highlight in their cover letter their strengths in each of these components, and to address all of them in their presentation of their experience and plans.

Finally, we ask the applicant to clearly indicate in the cover letter for their application whether they are applying for the position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level.

Specific Duties and Qualifications for Each Position

In addition to the general duties and qualifications outlined above:

  • An Associate Professor position requires demonstrated leadership and administrative skill as well as collaboration with industry and outreach.
  • An Assistant Professor position requires that the PhD degree was awarded within seven years of the application deadline.

Salary

Salary is to be determined by negotiation. The application should include a statement of the salary level required by the candidate.
